Reformed Confessions on the Lord’s Supper as a Means of Grace (II)

Part I is here. The Westminster Confession of Faith (1647)   The seventeenth-century Reformed confession produced by the Westminster Assembly, The Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF), says in its chapter “Of Saving Faith”:   The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls, is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts, and is ordinarily wrought by the ministry of  [ Read More ]

Reformed Confessions on the Lord’s Supper as a Means of Grace (I)

In this section we will look at three confessions: The Belgic Confession of 1561 (a continental Reformed product), The Westminster Confession of 1647 (a British Presbyterian product), and The Second London Confession of 1677/89 (a British Particular Baptist product). Though it is thought by some that the seventeenth-century Particular Baptists were bare memorialists, it will become obvious that this is not the case. R. L. Dabney on Hebrews 4:9

This verse [Heb. 4:9] (with its context, which must be carefully read) teaches that, as there remains to believers under the Christian dispensation a hope of an eternal rest, so there remains to us an earthly Sabbath to foreshadow it. The points to be noticed in the explanation of the chapter are: That God has an eternal spiritual rest; that he invited Old Testament believers to share it; that it  [ Read More ]

Commenting on Hebrews 7:18, 19, Owen says:   I have proved before that “the commandment” in this verse [Heb. 7:18] is of equal extent and signification with “the law” in the next. And  [ Read More ]

THE DECALOGUE IN THE THOUGHT OF KEY REFORMED THEOLOGIANS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO JOHN OWEN 3

Part 1 here. Part 2 here.   The Multi-functional Utility of the Decalogue in Owen and Others   1. John Owen. Owen viewed the Decalogue as having more than one function. He did not view it as Old Covenant law alone. His understanding of the multi-functional utility of the Decalogue can be seen clearly in several places of his Hebrews commentary. For instance, commenting on Heb. 9:5 (referenced above), he  [ Read More ]
